I’m writing with this week’s Steward report, which includes an update following Friday’s Membership Review, next steps related to move-out procedures, and an important reminder regarding voting confidentiality and member conduct.
Membership Review Outcome (Owen)
On Friday, we held a Membership Review for Owen. The membership voted that Owen violated his contract. As a result of this vote, Owen is no longer a member and is banned from all CHEA properties.
“Bailey: i motion to recognize that owen has violated the lease agreement and chea harassment policy
Corey: to clarify - bailey is moving to terminate owens membership
Bailey: yes
Bailey motions that owen has violated the lease agreement and chea harassment policy and to terminate owens membership.”
7-2-0 MOTION PASSES
I have informed Owen of the outcome of the vote and have also provided him with information regarding the appeals process.
Move-Out & Deposit Details Regarding Owen’s departure:
His room was left properly cleaned on December 19th.One key was left on the windowsill.Grace’s guest meals were paid for via an envelope placed in the rent collection box.I am not aware of any outstanding labor fines.I am assuming December rent was paid in full, as I have not received any notice from the Treasurer or Bookkeeper indicating otherwise.
Based on the above, Owen should receive: His full security deposit, minus the $100 contract break fee, and prorated rent for the period from December 20–31, reflecting his move-out date of the 19th.
Mail & Personal Items:
Both Owens have received some mail (likely holiday-related). Please give any mail addressed to them to David or myself so it can be safely stored and properly handed off when they return to town.
Voting Confidentiality & Conduct Reminder:
I have received reports of speculation and retaliation regarding how individuals voted during the Membership Review. This behavior is not acceptable and directly violates our policies and the spirit of democratic process within the house.
For clarity, our Membership Review procedures state:
“5. The vote will be a secret, written vote, tallied by the Meeting Chair and the Steward.”
“[2] This allows members to vote freely without fear of retribution. This is especially important if the member is being reviewed for violent or abusive behavior.”
Additionally, from our House Rules:
“4.9.2.4. C: Behavior that instills fear in people is not acceptable.”
Speculating about secret votes, pressuring others, or retaliating in any way undermines trust, cooperation, and the right of members to participate freely. This behavior will not be tolerated.
Remaining Action Items:
The following items still need to be completed:
–Owen must be removed from the house email list and Slack (Olivia – Mastodon)
–Owen’s deposit must be returned within 30 days (Eevee – Treasurer)
–Owen has expressed willingness to coordinate with David M regarding any remaining items related to the kitchen overhaul. Once this is complete, David M should notify the house.
–Owen’s officerships need to be opened for election: Maintenance Coordinator, Grounds Coordinator (Nicholas – Labor Coordinator). In the meantime, per our process, please direct your questions regarding these topics to me directly.
If there are any questions about these next steps or concerns that need to be addressed, please reach out directly.
Thank you,
